Kyle Wiens, CEO, iFixit: We see medical devices that are used in developing countries. You'll take something like a vital sign monitor, like I've got this Welch Allyn vital sign monitor. It's very high-tech, very modern. It's got a lot of the same components in it that you'd see in a laptop. And you use it here for a while, and then, you take it to Kenya and you plug it into a hospital there, and it works great for a month, and then they have a brownout where the voltage goes from 120 volts to 80 volts, and all of a sudden, you have a lot more current flowing through this thing, and it will burn out components in that vital sign monitor in Africa that would have never failed here. And, the service manual from the manufacturer doesn't include repairing these scenarios because they didn't anticipate it. And that's where you start to get into a level of information about the product that the manufacturers are not willing to provide. You need the actual schematic for the device. And so, there's a guy in Tanzania who gets the information on how to repair all of these medical devices and puts them on the web. And he has a wonderful website. It's called "Frank's Hospital Workshop". And he has service manuals for devices from Medtronic and Welch Allyn and GE and all kinds of medical device manufacturers. [He] puts them online and very quickly, he gets legal notices from the medical device manufacturers, saying "We do not want people in Africa to know how to repair our medical equipment." And it's absolutely crazy that manufacturers are using copyright as a way of killing equipment. They're saying "We don't want anyone to be able to repair that because we want you to go and buy a new one from us," even though the hospital in Tanzania is never going to be able to afford the equipment.
